Managing your time will not only allow you to be more productive in your business by keeping you focused on what is really important, but it will also help lower stress. Here are five ways that you can manage your time and grow your home business successfully.
Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
When you compare yourself to others and see them having more success than you, or doing all kinds of activities you feel you just don’t have time for, it often becomes difficult to maintain your motivation.
Some people seem to be able to do it all, and when you have young children to look after or you are still working in another job while starting your own business, where does the time come from? Things are not always what they seem. Their situation and lifestyle may be very different from yours. They may also project a picture of success when that is not really the case. You need to create a schedule that works best for you and your family, and create the kind of business you want and deserve.
Stick to an Agenda
Try to stick to an agenda and don’t let email dictate your schedule, which is exactly what will happen if you start your day by opening your email. So, avoid checking email first thing in the morning.
Sorting, reading, deleting, and replying to email will take up your time and sabotage the beginning of your day. It will lead you in many other directions, and you will likely end up thinking of other things to do instead of getting to the items on your agenda. You are almost guaranteed to end up behind schedule. Start the day working on the items on your agenda, and focus on only those. You will find you get a lot more done. The email will still be there an hour or two later.
Start your day with a revenue-generating activity. Revenue-generating activities are tasks that you do that are directly related to getting more clients/customers or bringing in more money. What is the number one thing you can do today to increase your income and grow your business? This may look like consultations or discovery sessions, follow-up conversations, sales conversations, marketing, booking speaking engagements or, if you are in direct sales, booking home demonstrations or parties, etc.
Tracking Your Time
If you’re disappointed in the results in an area of your business, consider how much time you are spending on it. Do you easily get distracted and side-tracked? Do you know how you are spending your time and if you’re spending it wisely? Try tracking your time and what you’re doing every day for a week. When you know where you’re spending your time, you can schedule your time appropriately each day. If you are not spending enough time in that one area of your business, you can block off time to work on that and make it a priority.
Outsourcing and Delegating
If you really do have lack of time to get everything done, you need to decide what tasks you are wasting time on that need to be done, but don’t need to be done specifically by you. Whether this is administrative work, technological work, or housework, if delegating those tasks to a virtual assistant or personal assistant will help you find more time to do more revenue-generating activities, why would you choose to keep limiting your potential for business growth?
